Both of these latter product placements were incredibly unnecessary plot points that very obviously were thrown in for money and some jokes staler than that pizza or cinnamon roll could ever be. Throughout the film, Walter delivers tender dialogue about, and even ends up in, a Papa John's restaurant and additionally spends a whole scene enjoying an airport Cinnabon.

ThatвЂ™s before we even get into the fact that the character of Walter Mitty works for the very real Life Magazine (a technically defunct company, but the brand is still owned and used occasionally by TIME). I donвЂ™t know if Ben Stiller wanted to go after Michael BayвЂ™s crown as the вЂњ King of Product Placement,вЂќ but making the real-life dating site eharmony a central plot point to the film truly is a power move in terms of corporate sponsorships in Hollywood. Many of these points were picked up by critics and were seen as dealbreakers in terms of truly accepting and enjoying this movie.ДЇirst of all, the product placement is unbelievably excessive. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was a commercial success (it made $188.3 million dollars at the box office with a $90 million budget), but received quite mixed reviews, as evidenced by its 51% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.Д«efore we delve into why I believe this film to be underrated, letвЂ™s start with the undeniably bad aspects of this film. This was the first film that Stiller directed since his 2008 smash hit Tropic Thunder, which he also starred in. The supporting cast is rounded out by notable actors such as Adam Scott, Kathryn Han, Patton Oswalt and Shirley Maclaine. The B Plot follows MittyвЂ™s romantic interest with his coworker Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), both in-person and on the dating site eharmony. When legendary photojournalist Sean OвЂ™Connell (Sean Penn) somehow forgets to send the cover photo for the final print version of the magazine, a photo that OвЂ™Connell himself calls the вЂњQuintessence of LifeвЂќ, Mitty jumps out of his daydreams and into the real world on a globetrotting adventure to find OвЂ™Connell and retrieve the photo for himself. The film follows the titular star Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), a neurotic, but wildly imaginative negative assets manager for Life Magazine. This series will dive into the subjective mind of none other than an undergraduate student who wants to give some overlooked films their time in the spotlight! There is plenty of subjectivity when it comes to grading the вЂњvalueвЂќ of a movie.

As can be expected, these reviews will be highly opinionated. After all, a film is just like any other piece of art: some people will resonate with it, while others wonвЂ™t. Or, at the very least, these films are just unworthy of the amount of hate that critics and/or audiences gave them and someone needs to speak up for them.

They may not be perfect, but there are aspects about them that make them worthy of recognition. My aim is to highlight the positive aspects of more recent films that were either critical or commercial failures and may one day very well achieve the status of the вЂњcultвЂќ title. No, we will be delving into films that arenвЂ™t quite there yet. This series will not take safety in the cover of arguing for the appreciation of already appreciated cult films. However, critically unsuccessful films usually take quite a long time to be appreciated by the general public. Films that initially received less-than-stellar reviews, but are later pushed to immense popularity due to a dedicated fanbase, may sometimes achieve the moniker of being a вЂњcultвЂќ film (examples of this include The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). To call a film with mixed-reviews, or even downright bad ratings, вЂњunderratedвЂќ is a precarious stance.
